Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008 โ€“ 2009)

Set after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), the series follows Sarah Connor (Lena Headey) and her son, John Connor (Thomas Dekker), who is destined to become the leader of the resistance against Skynet, the deadly artificial intelligence of the future. After preventing Skynetโ€™s initial rise, Sarah and John continue living in hiding, always on guard against the threat of being hunted by Terminators and the U.S. government. However, their peace is short-lived when a new Terminator, Cameron (Summer Glau), arrives from the future to protect John from another assassin Terminator. Unlike most machines, Cameron exhibits unusual behavior, sometimes resembling human emotions, making John both drawn to and wary of her.

Realizing that Skynet has not been fully eradicated and that Judgment Day may still occur, Sarah decides to stop running and take the fight directly to Skynet. The group uses a time displacement device to jump to the year 2007, where they face new threats. The FBI, particularly Agent James Ellison (Richard T. Jones), begins hunting them, believing Sarah to be a dangerous terrorist. Meanwhile, a relentless Terminator assassin, Cromartie (Garret Dillahunt), continues his pursuit of John.

As they fight for survival, Sarah and John encounter Derek Reese (Brian Austin Green), the brother of Kyle Reeseโ€”Johnโ€™s father from the future. Derek, a battle-hardened soldier, provides them with crucial information about Skynet and the war ahead. Meanwhile, they uncover the existence of a mysterious artificial intelligence called The Turk, created by a genius programmer. Sarah suspects that The Turk may be the precursor to Skynet and attempts to destroy it before it can evolve into a global threat.

While Sarah focuses on stopping Skynet, John begins to mature and struggles with the pressure of his future role as the resistance leader. Cameron, despite being a Terminator, starts exhibiting strange behavior, at times appearing to have emotions. John gradually develops trust in her but also fears that she could turn against him. Elsewhere, Cromartie is ultimately destroyed, but his intelligence is repurposed into a new AI entity called John Henry. Meanwhile, Catherine Weaver (Shirley Manson), a T-1001 liquid-metal Terminator disguised as a businesswoman, emerges with a secretive agenda involving John Henry and Skynet.

Sarah Connor Chronicles Writer Claims the Last WGA Strike Killed the Show

The tension escalates when Sarah is captured by the government, forcing John and his allies to plan a rescue mission. As they continue their search for answers about Skynet, they discover that its plans extend far beyond anything they had imagined. In the final episodes, John is unexpectedly transported to a future where no one recognizes him, leaving him to navigate this new reality without his mother by his side.

Terminator: Why The Sarah Connor Chronicles Was Canceled So Quickly

The series ends with an open-ended twist, leaving many questions unanswered: Can John continue his mission after being thrown into an entirely different timeline? Is Cameron truly a friend or a potential enemy? And has Skynet really been stopped, or is it simply biding its time? Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles expands the Terminator universe while introducing fresh ideas about the war between humans and machines, delving deep into the psychology of its characters, and cementing itself as one of the most compelling series in the franchise.
