Snack Shack (2024)
"Snack Shack" is a 2024 American coming-of-age comedy film written and directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier, set during the summer of 1991 in Nebraska City. The film follows two 14-year-old best friends, A.J. Carter and Moose Miller, who are always looking for ways to make money, such as betting on horse races and brewing their own beer to sell to classmates. When their parents find out and forbid them from brewing beer, they decide to look for another summer job.
Shane Workman, an older friend and a Gulf War veteran, suggests they lease the snack shack at the local community pool. A.J. and Moose use A.J.'s college savings to bid and win the rights to run the snack shack, despite A.J.'s parents' disappointment. The snack shack quickly becomes a success, earning over $1,600 on its first day.
A girl named Brooke moves in next door to A.J. She teases him about his allergies when mowing the lawn and his habit of taking candid photos of people, including her. A.J. helps Brooke get a job as a lifeguard at the pool and quickly becomes infatuated with her. Moose also finds Brooke attractive and asks her out. During a double date, A.J. is heartbroken when he sees Moose and Brooke kissing. Tensions rise between A.J. and Moose, along with conflicts with the local bullies, brothers Randy and Rodney Carmichael.
Shane becomes a mentor to A.J., offering life and dating advice. A.J. and Shane plan to go mountain climbing in Alaska the following summer. Meanwhile, Brooke grows closer to A.J. and invites him to a party at an abandoned movie theater. When the police arrive to break up the party, Brooke, A.J., and Moose hide behind the movie screen, creating a tense but comedic moment.
After this event, Moose falsely claims that Brooke made a move on him, which angers A.J., leading him to leave work early. Shane encourages A.J., assuring him that Brooke genuinely cares for him. At another party, A.J. and Brooke kiss, making Moose jealous and prompting him to punch A.J. Their friendship deteriorates, and the Carmichael brothers vandalize the snack shack. However, Shane’s sudden death in a car accident brings A.J. and Moose back together as they share the pain of losing their mentor.
Later, Brooke has to move to Germany with her family, leaving A.J. with a handkerchief and a photo of him and Shane as a keepsake. The film ends with A.J. and his father drinking beer together on the porch, symbolizing his growth and the strengthening of their bond after a life-changing summer.
